Changes - What's in store

Postby Dr. John Zeigler - PEP Ed » Sun Nov 22, 2009 10:30 am

For almost 15 years, I have written much of, edited, and served as webmaster for PEP, after co-founding it in 1995 - well before most people and companies had begun to use the Internet. During that time, I have kept PEP free of ads and other commercial content, depending instead on the graciousness and willingness of other public-spirited pianists, educators and visitors to help me generate content and defray some of the costs of running the site by donating server space. To all those who have helped in these and other ways, I want to express my thanks and gratitude - and that of the many people they have helped me help all around the world.

However, despite the many non-monetary contributions of others to the site, it has still cost me well into five figures in out-of-pocket expenses to keep the site up and running. After much consideration, I have decided that the only way that I can recoup those expenses is by placing ads on the site. I have been one of the last "holdouts" against ads, but I hope that site visitors will understand the need for this. I'm hoping that ad income will also be sufficient to provide an honorarium for authors who contribute articles to the site, since it has become increasingly difficult to obtain contributions of articles from members of the piano community.

I have no illusions that ad income will ever come close to reimbursing me for nearly 15 years of 15-20 hrs per week, on average, of work, nor do I seek that. PEP has been a "labor of love" for me and, I hope, for all those who have contributed their insights and time to the site. Their contributions of articles and insights are still needed. I will be moving the site in a few weeks to a commercial server, which will allow me to place the ads, since I will not violate the intentions of the visitor who has donated the space for so many years. I thank him here for his help and contributions to the site. PEP will remain available as the resource it has been. I hope that this change will allow me to grow the site better and faster in the future.
